What is Skin Cancer Reconstruction?
Skin cancer reconstruction is a surgical procedure that improves the appearance of the skin after a cancerous growth has been removed. Skin cancer is sometimes removed from very visible areas of the face and may leave behind a noticeable scar. Dr. Roussel can use surgical techniques to conceal and improve the appearance of a facial skin cancer scar to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing look.

Skin Cancer Reconstruction Candidates
The best candidates for skin cancer reconstruction are patients who have undergone a skin cancer removal procedure and have a resulting scar. Skin cancer growths are often removed from visible areas of the face and may leave behind noticeable scar tissue. If you’re bothered by the appearance of this scar, skin cancer reconstruction can help. In order to be considered a good candidate for skin cancer reconstruction, you should be in overall good health and able to undergo a brief recovery period. Dr. Roussel will take a detailed medical history and discuss the details of your skin cancer removal procedure to ensure all cancer has been removed. Then, she will help you carefully develop an appropriate surgical plan.
Sometimes, scars can be treated using non-surgical treatments. Dr. Roussel will provide a professional recommendation on the best way to achieve your desired look.
Skin Cancer Reconstruction Procedure Steps
Skin cancer reconstruction is often able to be performed using local anesthesia and a sedative. However, more complex cases may require general anesthesia. There are multiple techniques that can be used to reconstruct the skin after skin cancer removal and Dr. Roussel will help you select the right one during your consultation. Your procedure may involve grafts from another area of the body or a technique called a “local flap” where a portion of skin is shifted from the nearby area to cover the scar. Once the skin has been reconstructed, you can return home for your brief recovery.

Skin Cancer Reconstruction Results and Recovery
Recovery after skin cancer reconstruction is typically minimal but may be more substantial depending on your unique surgical plan. You may be required to avoid strenuous activities and getting the surgical site wet for the first few weeks. Dr. Roussel will provide detailed instruction on keeping the area covered, managing swelling, and reducing the chances of visible scarring. It’s essential to follow instructions as closely as possible to ensure a good result from your procedure.
Swelling may take 2-3 weeks to subside, with additional healing taking several more weeks. It may take up to a year for any scarring to fade completely. At this point, you’ll see a noticeable improvement in the overall look of the area with minimal visible signs of your initial skin cancer procedure. When performed by an experienced plastic and reconstructive surgeon, you can achieve great results with skin cancer reconstruction.
