What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is one of the top plastic surgery procedures performed each year. Breast augmentation uses implants to enhance the size, shape, and projection of the breasts. There are a variety of breast implants, incisions, and placement options available, and a knowledgeable plastic surgeon can help you customize your breast augmentation procedure to your exact needs.

Breast Augmentation Candidates
Breast augmentation is ideal for women who are bothered by the size or overall profile of their breasts. They may have experienced changes with pregnancy or simply have naturally smaller breasts that don’t balance the rest of their figure. To be considered a good candidate for breast augmentation, you should be in overall good health and able to take time away from regular activities. Dr. Roussel will thoroughly examine your breasts and your cosmetic goals to help you develop an appropriate treatment plan.
Breast augmentation is most commonly combined with a breast lift or tummy tuck (known as a procedure called a mommy makeover). A breast lift can help rejuvenate the breasts by lifting them to a higher position on the chest. For some women, this can result in more complete results. Dr. Roussel will give you a professional recommendation on the best way to balance your figure and achieve your desired results.
Breast Implant Types
Breast implants are made with a silicone outer shell but are categorized according to their filling. Saline-filled implants are filled with sterile salt water while silicone implants are filled with a soft silicone gel. There are benefits to each and Dr. Roussel will help you select the right option based on factors like your anatomy, preferences, and surgical plan.
Incision Types
There are a few different incision options for breast augmentation, including underneath the fold of the breast, around the areola, or within the armpit. Some incisions are better for certain implants or surgical approaches. Dr. Roussel will help you select the best option for your desired results.
Implant Placement Types
Breast implants have traditionally been placed within the tissue of the breast on top of the chest muscle. However, an alternative placement option includes placing the implant partly underneath the chest muscle. This second option may be better for patients who have less body fat or who want a more natural look and feel. The first option may be better if you want more projection or have sufficient breast tissue to cover the implants. Dr. Roussel will recommend the best option based on your anatomy and goals.
Breast Augmentation Procedure Steps
Breast augmentation is performed as an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia. Dr. Roussel will perform the predetermined incision pattern and create a pocket within the breast tissue. The chosen implants will be placed according to your placement preferences and the incisions will be closed. Once complete, you can return home.
1-2 Weeks
Breast Augmentation Results and Recovery
Breast augmentation recovery takes 1-2 weeks. Throughout your initial recovery, you should avoid intensive activity and dedicate time to resting. Dr. Roussel will give you detailed instructions on managing swelling, caring for your incisions, and reporting any signs of complications. You’ll be given a special surgical bra to wear during this time to support your implants and relieve pressure from your incisions. Make sure to sleep on your back and in an elevated position to reduce swelling.
Although most swelling should subside within 2-3 weeks, it can take several more weeks for the implants to settle and for residual swelling to go away. As swelling goes away, you’ll see an immediate improvement in the size and proportion of your breasts. When performed by an experienced plastic surgeon, your breast augmentation results can last for decades.
