What is Breast Revision?

Breast revision is a procedure designed to revise and improve the results of previous breast surgery. If you underwent breast implant surgery, breast lift, breast reduction, or other breast surgery recently or in the past and the results did not meet your expectations, breast revision can be performed by an experienced plastic surgeon. Breast revision can be performed by your original plastic surgeon or by a knowledgeable revisional plastic surgeon such as Dr. Roussel.

Breast Revision Candidates

Good candidates for breast revision are women who underwent a past breast surgery but experienced complications or unsatisfactory results. Some women opt for breast revision because they underwent body changes that affected their results such as pregnancy or weight loss. Others opt for breast revision to remove or exchange their implants. To be considered a good candidate for breast revision, you should be in overall good health and able to take time to recover afterward. Dr. Roussel will assess the details of your previous surgery and perform a thorough examination to determine the best approach to your revisional surgery.

Breast revision is typically performed on its own, but you may be able to combine it with other options based on Dr. Roussel’s professional opinion. This may include adding or removing implants or adding a breast lift. An experienced revisional plastic surgeon such as Dr. Roussel can give you the best estimate of how to revise your previous surgery during a consultation.

Breast Revision Procedure Steps

Breast revision is performed similarly to your initial breast surgery. Dr. Roussel will help you select a new incision pattern or will make use of your previous incision sites. Then, Dr. Roussel will revise your breasts by removing or exchanging implants, removing scar tissue, or lifting and excising tissue according to your specific surgical plan. Once complete, the incisions will be closed and prepared for your recovery period.

1-2 Weeks

Breast Revision Results and Recovery

Breast revision recovery is similar to your initial breast surgery. You can expect to take 1-2 weeks to rest at home and avoid extensive activity. Dr. Roussel will give you detailed instructions on how to care for your incisions, manage swelling, and report any signs of complication. It’s essential to wear your surgical bra according to instructions during this time – this helps relieve pressure from your incisions and support your breasts. It’s also essential to sleep on your back in an elevated position to reduce swelling.

Most swelling should subside within 2-3 weeks, although it may take several more for any residual swelling to go away. After 2-3 weeks, you’ll begin to see your revised results. When performed by an experienced plastic surgeon, your breast revision results can last for decades.
