What is Male Breast Reduction?

Gynecomastia surgery, or male breast reduction, is a procedure designed to reduce enlarged male breasts. This condition, called gynecomastia, is indicated by excess fat or breast tissue on the chest that creates female-like breasts. Gynecomastia can sometimes be treated by adjusting lifestyle factors, but gynecomastia surgery performed by a skilled and professional plastic surgeon is sometimes the most effective way to achieve a flatter, more masculine chest.

Male Breast Reduction Candidates

The best candidates for male breast reduction are men who have feminine-looking breasts. Although many men experience enlarged breasts during puberty or middle age, gynecomastia may persist despite having no apparent underlying causes. Men who have gynecomastia often experience low self-confidence in situations where it may be normal to take their shirt off, like at the beach or pool. In order to be considered a good candidate for gynecomastia surgery, you should be in overall good health and able to take time for recovery. Dr. Roussel will examine your chest and discuss your medical history before thoroughly discussing your possible options with male breast reduction.

Male Breast Reduction Procedure Steps

Gynecomastia surgery can be performed using general anesthesia. There are a few techniques and incision options available, and Dr. Roussel will discuss your surgical plan during your consultation. Once your incisions have been performed, Dr. Roussel will remove fatty and glandular tissue from your chest and excise any extra skin. Liposuction may be used to further contour the chest and achieve a better result. The incisions will then be closed and you’ll be prepared for your recovery at home.

1-2 Weeks

Male Breast Reduction Results and Recovery

Male breast reduction recovery typically takes 1-2 weeks. During this time, it’s essential to focus on resting and avoiding elevating your heart rate with intensive activities. Dr. Roussel will provide detailed aftercare instructions on managing swelling, following up, and reporting any signs of complication. You’ll be given a special compression vest to wear during this time to help reduce swelling and ensure good results. Make sure to sleep in an elevated position and avoid sleeping on your side or stomach.

Within 1-2 weeks, swelling should subside and your results will become visible. However, it may take several more weeks for all residual swelling to subside. Your results will include a noticeably flatter and more masculine chest with a reduction in protruding or enlarged breast tissue. When performed by an experienced plastic surgeon, gynecomastia surgery results can last for many years.
