What is Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast reduction is a procedure that reduces very large and heavy breasts. Patients who have large or encumbering breasts often experience negative symptoms and look for ways to achieve relief through reconstructive surgery. Breast reduction is often the best way to create smaller breasts and achieve a higher quality of life. Dr. Roussel can provide deep knowledge of reconstructive breast surgery and help you select the best approach for your needs.

Breast Reduction Candidates

Patients who are good candidates for breast reduction are those who experience negative symptoms from having very large breasts. Common symptoms include mobility limitations, difficulty breathing, back pain, chafing, and more. Some women have very large breasts because of genetics, while others may acquire them because of circumstances like pregnancy or weight gain. In order to be considered a good candidate for breast reduction, you should be in overall good health and able to take time to recover from surgery. During a consultation, Dr. Roussel will examine your breasts and discuss your goals for surgery to determine if breast reduction is the best possible option.

Breast reduction is often paired with other surgical techniques like liposuction or a breast lift. These techniques allow Dr. Roussel to more thoroughly reconstruct the area. Dr. Roussel will give you a professional recommendation on the best way to perform your procedure during your consultation.

Breast Reduction Procedure Steps

Breast reduction can be performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. Dr. Roussel will discuss the incision pattern options during your consultation and help you understand your unique surgical plan. Once the incisions are performed, Dr. Roussel will reduce the size of your breasts by removing tissue and excising stretched skin. Once complete, the incisions will be closed, and you will return home.

1-2 Weeks

Breast Reduction Results and Recovery

Recovery after breast reduction may take 1-2 weeks. During this time, it’s essential to focus on resting and avoid elevating your heart rate with intensive activity. Dr. Roussel will give you detailed instructions on managing swelling, taking care of your incisions, reporting signs of complication, and following up. You will be given a special surgical bra to support your new breast and relieve tension from your incisions – wear this according to Dr. Roussel’s instructions. You will also be asked to sleep in an elevated position and avoid sleeping on your side or stomach.

It may take 2-3 weeks for swelling to subside, as well as an additional few weeks for residual swelling to go away. You will begin to see your results within 1-2 weeks of surgery as well as relief from any symptoms you were experiencing prior. When performed by an experienced plastic surgeon, breast reduction can last for many years.
