What is IPL?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. IPL is a laser light technology that can stimulate the production of healthy new collagen in the skin and fade areas of pigmentation. The IPL Photofacial can rejuvenate the skin with very little downtime and gentle laser energy, making it ideal for many different cosmetic concerns. Dr. Roussel can help you explore your laser treatment options based on your specific concerns.

IPL Candidates

The best candidates for IPL treatment are patients who are bothered by the following concerns:

  • Moles
  • Sun damage and brown spots
  • Rosacea
  • Red spots
  • Scars
  • Stretch marks
  • Spider veins

Dr. Roussel will assess your skin and help you carefully consider your options. IPL can easily be combined with other non-surgical treatments like chemical peels or physician-grade skincare products for best results. You will get a professional recommendation on the ideal regimen for your goals during your consultation.

IPL Photofacial Procedure Steps

IPL treatment does not typically require anesthetic but a numbing cream may be provided if needed. To begin, your skin will be cleansed and you will review the details of your treatment with Dr. Roussel. You will also be given protective eye shields. Then, the laser energy will be applied to your skin. IPL administers very fast pulses of light energy that are absorbed by the pigment in the skin such as melanin or hemoglobin. There, the light energy generates heat and simultaneously damages the cells, and generates healthy new collagen. Once the area has been treated, your skin will be soothed and made ready for the rest of your day.

One week

IPL Results and Recovery

Dr. Roussel will provide detailed aftercare instructions for your skin. Protecting the treatment area from sunlight is incredibly important in the following months. Although you may return to your daily activities right away, it may take up to one week for your skin to fully heal from treatment. You may have some minor redness and sensitivity within the first few days. You may also notice that pigmented areas such as moles become darker – they will eventually float to the surface of the skin and flake off, leaving clear, unblemished skin. Over several weeks, you will also notice a brighter, more youthful quality to the treated skin.

IPL may require multiple treatments for best results and Dr. Roussel will give you a professional estimate of how many sessions are needed for your goals. These sessions are best performed monthly and most patients benefit from 2-3 rounds of treatment. Touch-up treatments on a yearly or bi-yearly basis are also recommended by Dr. Roussel.
