What is Buccal Fat Removal?

Buccal fat removal is a procedure that removes the buccal fat pads, or the pads of fat in the cheeks. While the buccal fat pads normally give the face its youthful shape, these fat pads may be more prominent in some people. This can contribute to the look of a “baby face” or a face that is particularly round even in adulthood. By removing the buccal fat pads, a knowledgeable plastic surgeon can thin your face and achieve a more defined look.

Buccal Fat Removal Candidates

To be considered a good candidate for buccal fat removal, you should be in overall good health and able to take time to recover. Buccal fat removal is not a good cosmetic option for everyone, since removing the buccal fat pads can cause the face to appear too thin as you age. Only an experienced plastic surgeon such as Dr. Roussel can determine if you can benefit from buccal fat removal.

Buccal fat removal can be combined with procedures like chin surgery or neck liposuction for even more complete facial contouring. Dr. Roussel will give a professional opinion on how to best achieve your cosmetic goals during a consultation.

Buccal Fat Removal Procedure Steps

Buccal fat removal can sometimes be performed using sedation or a local anesthetic. Dr. Roussel will help you select the most appropriate choice before your procedure. At the beginning of the procedure, Dr. Roussel will create incisions within either side of the mouth. She will remove the buccal fat pads through these small incisions before closing them. Once the procedure is complete, you can return home for your recovery.

1-2 Weeks

Buccal Fat Removal Results and Recovery

You should expect to take 1-2 weeks away from work and normal activities while you recover. Dr. Roussel will provide detailed aftercare instructions on caring for your incisions, watching for complications, and following up after your procedure. Most importantly, you will need to be on a liquid or soft foods diet for the first few days. You may also need to use a special mouth rinse to keep away infection. Finally, make sure to keep your head elevated to prevent swelling.

Although you’ll begin to see results within 2-3 weeks, it can take several months for your results to settle into their final appearance. You’ll see noticeable definition in your cheeks and an overall thinner look to your face. As long as you maintain a healthy and active lifestyle, your buccal fat removal results can last for the long term.
