What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, sometimes called a nose job, is a surgical procedure that changes many different aesthetic and functional aspects of the nose. Rhinoplasty is one of the most sought-after procedures performed by plastic surgeons each year because of the positive and transformative impact it can have on the overall facial profile. When performed by a knowledgeable plastic surgeon, rhinoplasty can achieve a look that flatters your natural features.

Rhinoplasty Candidates
Many patients seek out rhinoplasty because they’re bothered by the look of their nose in relation to the rest of their face. They may feel that it sticks out too far or has a hump that draws attention. Some patients have a crooked or injured nose that interferes with their breathing ability. To have a successful rhinoplasty procedure, you should be in overall good health and able to take time to recover from surgery. Dr. Roussel will asses your goals for rhinoplasty and perform a complete examination to help you carefully select the best option.
Rhinoplasty can be performed on its own but many patients also opt for additional facial contouring procedures like chin augmentation or neck liposuction. Combined, these procedures can enhance the facial profile and bring it into better balance and harmony. Dr. Roussel will give you a professional recommendation on the best procedures to achieve a balanced look that maintains your natural and unique features.
Rhinoplasty Procedure Steps
Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure performed using general anesthesia. Rhinoplasty works by removing or restructuring cartilage or bone within the nose to achieve a new profile. Dr. Roussel will help you select from the two rhinoplasty techniques available. The first is an open technique that requires an incision across the columella, or the strip of skin between the nostrils. Through this incision, the underlying structures can be revealed and manipulated into an improved shape. The second option is a closed rhinoplasty which uses incisions completely inside the nasal passages. This technique produces no visible scarring but is better for less extensive restructuring. Once the ideal look has been achieved, your incisions will be closed, and you can return home.

Rhinoplasty Results and Recovery
It can take about two weeks to recover from rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty comes with a longer recovery period than many other facial procedures because of the delicate structures of the nose. During your recovery, it’s essential to avoid elevating your heart rate or doing strenuous activities. Dr. Roussel will give you detailed instructions including wearing a nasal splint, managing swelling, and avoiding touching or bothering your nose. You must keep your head upright and avoid blowing your nose, wearing glasses, and exposing your nose to direct sunlight.
Most swelling from your rhinoplasty should subside within a few weeks but it can take many months for all residual swelling to go away. Once the swelling begins to go down, you’ll notice an improvement in your nose’s shape, appearance, and function. Rhinoplasty can last for many years when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon such as Dr. Roussel.
