What is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure that rejuvenates the upper and lower eyelids. As you age, or as a result of genetics, you may experience sagging in the upper or lower eyelids which causes a tired or small appearance to the eyes. Eyelid surgery can lift and get rid of sagging skin that sits on the upper eyelids or sags below the eyes, creating bags or troughs. When performed by an experienced plastic surgeon, eyelid surgery can achieve a brighter, more rested look to the eyes and upper face.

Eyelid Surgery Candidates

Eyelid surgery candidates are typically those who are bothered by the appearance of their eyes and upper face when in a resting position. They may feel as if they look tired or worn out even after a good night’s rest. To be considered a good candidate for eyelid surgery, you should be in overall good health and able to take time to recover after surgery. During a consultation, Dr. Roussel will perform an examination and carefully discuss your options for facial rejuvenation, including eyelid surgery.

Eyelid surgery is often combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures. One of the most common options is the brow lift which may or may not be performed instead of eyelid surgery. Other options include a facelift or even non-surgical treatments like fillers or neurotoxins. Dr. Roussel will give a professional opinion on the best approach for your cosmetic goals.

Eyelid Surgery Procedure Steps

Eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids, or both. It’s performed as an outpatient procedure and Dr. Roussel will help you select the appropriate anesthetic for your preferences. During upper eyelid surgery, a small incision will be created within the natural crease of the eyelid. This allows Dr. Roussel to remove excess skin and lift the eyelids to a more natural position. During lower eyelid surgery, a small incision is created either inside the lower eyelid or within the natural lash line. This allows Dr. Roussel to lift and rejuvenate the skin and fat pads under the eyes. Once complete, any incisions will be closed, and you can return home.

1-2 Weeks

Eyelid Surgery Results and Recovery

You can expect to spend 1-2 weeks recovering from eyelid surgery. It’s essential to limit your activity level and rest during this time. Dr. Roussel will give you detailed instructions to follow, including how to manage swelling, follow up, and report any concerning symptoms. Most importantly, you should keep your head elevated and avoid wearing contact lenses. You may experience dry eyes, and Dr. Roussel will recommend eye drops to help manage symptoms.

After several weeks, most swelling should subside. You’ll see a noticeable improvement in the appearance of your eyes and upper face, with a brighter, more youthful look. Eyelid surgery can last for the long term with the right anti-aging regimen recommended by Dr. Roussel.
