What is Scar Revision?
Scar revision is a type of reconstructive surgery that changes the appearance of a scar from a previous procedure or injury that has healed poorly or is in a visible area such as the face. It involves using surgical techniques to reduce the visibility of a scar by changing its position or better concealing it within the natural contours of the body. It may also involve removing texture or improving the function of an area of the body that is impeded by scar tissue. Using extensive cosmetic knowledge, Dr. Roussel can help conceal scars and achieve a more aesthetically pleasing look.

Scar Revision Candidates
The best candidates for scar revision are patients who have significant and visible facial scarring from a surgical procedure, injury, or burn. Many scar revision patients experience emotional discomfort or self-consciousness because of significant visible scarring. In order to be considered a good candidate for scar revision, you should be in overall good health and able to undergo a brief recovery period. During a consultation, Dr. Roussel will carefully examine your face and discuss the details of your medical history to formulate a surgical plan.
Surgical scar revision is not always needed for some candidates, and Dr. Roussel can give you a professional recommendation on whether you may be able to achieve results using non-surgical treatments or a combination of both.
Scar Revision Procedure Steps
Scar revision can be performed using local anesthesia and sedation. Dr. Roussel will use a variety of surgical techniques to remove or reposition scar tissue and skin to create a more subtle appearance to the scar. This may involve skin grafts or repositioning a nearby flap of skin. Once the procedure is complete, you can return home for your recovery.

Scar Revision Results and Recovery
Depending on the extent of your surgery, recovery may take 1-2 weeks. During this time, you may have minor swelling and redness and will need to limit your activity level accordingly. Dr. Roussel will provide information on managing swelling, following up, and reporting any complications. You’ll be asked to keep the area dry and regularly manage dressings, as well as keep the area covered and protected from sun exposure.
Although it can take 1-2 weeks for your incisions to heal, it will take up to a year for your final scar appearance to emerge. Dr. Roussel will recommend ways to help fade scarring and ensure a good result. When performed by a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, scar revision can produce long-term results.
