What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a plastic surgery procedure that contours the body by removing stubborn pockets of fat.
Through a small incision, Dr. Roussel can remove fatty tissue using surgical tools and a suction device.
The overall result of liposuction is a more defined look to your treatment area when traditional diet and
exercise don’t produce your desired result.

Liposuction Candidates
The best candidates for liposuction are patients who have stubborn, pinchable areas of fat. Many liposuction patients have lost significant weight and are left with deposits that don’t respond to diet and exercise. Others have genetic fat deposits that cause self-consciousness or difficulty wearing certain clothes. Some liposuction patients underwent pregnancy and have residual “baby weight.” In order to be considered a good candidate for liposuction, you should be in overall good health and able to take time to recover from surgery. Additionally, you should be at a healthy and stable weight – if you have further weight loss plans or are prone to fluctuations, liposuction may not be a good option. Dr. Roussel will carefully assess your medical history and cosmetic goals to help you develop the appropriate treatment plan with liposuction.
Liposuction can be easily combined with many other body contouring procedures like a body lift, tummy tuck, or chin surgery. It’s also a key part of procedures that use fat transfer like facial rejuvenation or buttock enhancement. Liposuction can be used on a wide range of areas of the body but some of the most common include the neck, stomach, thighs, hips, and arms. Dr. Roussel will recommend the right surgical approach for your goals during a consultation.
Liposuction Procedure Steps
Liposuction can be performed using general anesthesia or local anesthesia depending on your specific surgical procedure. Dr. Roussel will help you select the appropriate option during your consultation. To begin, Dr. Roussel will create a small entry point in your treatment area, through which surgical instruments can be inserted to break up fat and suction it away. Once complete, the incisions will be closed, and you may return home.

Liposuction Results and Recovery
Liposuction recovery can take 1-2 weeks. During this time, it’s best to rest and avoid elevating your heart rate since it can exacerbate swelling. Dr. Roussel will provide detailed aftercare instructions on following up, reporting complications, and managing swelling. One of the most important steps in your recovery is wearing a compression garment around your treatment area to reduce swelling and help the skin adhere to the new contours.
Within 2-3 weeks, most swelling should subside but it may take several more weeks for any residual swelling to go away. You’ll begin to see results immediately after your procedure, with a more defined look to the area and a reduction in stubborn fat. As long as you maintain a healthy and active lifestyle, liposuction results can last for many years.
